Not Having Kids Might Be The Right Move

After doing some research for my “The Pros Of Having Children” article I learned a few things I wasn’t aware of.

Waiting to have children is something that I have written about on several occasions for this site. If you really want kids, it’s best to wait until your financial position is in the best shape possible.

This can be a challenge for some, considering that as you age, the risks involved with having a child increase substantially.

To mitigate that, I had originally considered looking into adoption. However, after reading about it yesterday, I can see that the financial, legal, and emotional costs make it an unlikely choice for me personally.

With that, believe it or not, actually came a little bit of relief. Let’s take a look at why.

Less Stress

As it turns out, people that don’t have children experience less financial tension, and relationships without children tend to have less issues.

People that don’t have children also have more flexibility to lock in on their career.

Children can require a tremendous amount of time and attention. This can make it difficult to focus on the things listed above, which can put a strain on the parents involved.

More Flexibility

As someone such as myself that may want to change locations or change jobs over the years, not having dependents may make it a lot easier for me to do so.

Being able to move to a different location or change careers isn’t always an easy transition for adults that also have a family to support.

In some cases, couples may also stay together in unsatisfactory relationships for the sake of the children. They don’t want to be away from their kids, or don’t want their children to miss out on having a dual parent household.

Less Pressure

For some people, having children, or wanting to have children can put them in a fight against time. Either to hurry up and reach that desired savings rate, or even in some cases, for the time to pass until the child moves out of the household or becomes old enough to no longer need support.

Some people seem to get a lot older looking after having children. Not only because the act of giving birth can take a toll on the body, but also because the work involved with bringing the child to school, picking them up in the afternoon, and taking care of them in the evening can be a lot of work.

If you don’t have children, you may just have more time to slow down and enjoy life.

Final Thoughts

As someone who has listened to a lot of personal finance podcasts, one of the common themes is that if you really want to succeed, you have to really want it.

In a world where good jobs are hard to find, homes are more expensive to purchase, and education costs are rising, not having children may be the right move. Especially if you want to have any chance at getting ahead in the long run.

Thank you for reading. I hope that you have enjoyed this article, and I look forward to seeing you on the next one.
