Where I Got The Inspiration For This Site

As briefly touched on in other articles, when I graduated from college during the COVID pandemic, I found myself at a crossroads with a clean slate ahead of me.

After spending the previous year living in a big city, dealing with college kids, and living in college housing, I felt grateful to be back in my hometown to a more calm environment.

After dealing with severe insomnia and stress during that last year of coursework, I realized that bigger isn’t always better.

Considering the state that the world was in at the time, I found myself genuinely wondering what I might want to do with my life. After all, it seemed like everything else up to that point had crumbled.

There were no big job offers after college, and the dreams I once had of becoming a mainstream recording artist were pretty much put to rest.

As I was sitting in front of my laptop one afternoon, I found myself exploring what my options really were. Was it possible for me to still pursue music without the pressures of mainstream fame? Were there any alternatives to working a typical 9-5 career for 40 years? Was my degree really applicable toward my future?

That was when I discovered a website called Financial Samurai after an article came up in my search results titled “The Rise Of Stealth Wealth: Ways To Stay Invisible From Society If You Have Money“.

Sam’s Background

The owner of the site, Sam, has an interesting background that I found to be somewhat relatable. Basically, he had worked over twelve years in the corporate world, got burned out, and transitioned into running his own business at the age of 34 after negotiating a severance from his company.

At the time of starting his website, the economy was facing one of the greatest downturns in history. Sam had lost close to a third of his net worth, and realized that he needed something to fall back on as a financial buffer.

After three years of starting the site, and more than a decade of saving and investing, Sam had reached financial independence, which means that his passive income more than covered his living expenses. It was at that point that he decided to take the leap of faith and start focusing on Financial Samurai full time.

Financial Independence

Before reading that article, I had never heard the term “Financial Independence”, but I realized very quickly that this was exactly the sort of path I was looking for.

Basically, being financially independent means that you can retire early. For Sam it meant he was done with the corporate grind before the age of 35, and able to buy himself years of freedom.

This is typically reached through diversification. Having a portfolio of cash producing assets such as real estate properties, stocks, bonds, alternative investments, and business earnings.

The Financial Samurai Way

Essentially, the Financial Samurai way means enjoying the fruits of financial independence while still maintaining a mostly middle-class appearance. Rather than splurging on fancy cars, luxury clothing, and expensive jewelry, you choose modesty and humility.

Sam also recommends having an “X-Factor“. Your X-Factor is essentially the piece of the pie that gives your brand structure. It could be a top of the line talent in music, sports, art, etc.

Lastly, Sam is a big proponent of having your own website. It is great to use other platforms to promote, connect, and engage, but having your own website gives you the ability to maintain proper ownership of your work. This is something that most people in the personal finance community agree on.

Continued Interest In Financial Independence And Entrepreneurship

Over the years I have continued to take interest in the FIRE movement. I have continued to read books, listen to podcasts, and read articles on the subject, but most importantly, I have taken action to initiate financial independence within my own life.

I actually have to give great thanks to Sam, because otherwise I may not have been lead down this path.
