Making Peace With The Past
As mentioned in a previous article, one of the challenges of moving back to your hometown is at times feeling limited or held back to a past version of yourself. When you are constantly confronted with people, places, or things from the past, it can be easy for this to be the case. Sometimes it can feel like all your hard work was for nothing. After all, here you are still living in the same environment, and confronted with the same sorts of things you worked so hard to get away from.
Even though this of course isn’t the case, sometimes it does take some mental evaluation to see things more clearly.
You’re Not The Same Person You Used To Be
On the flip side of things, when you move to a new location you grant yourself the ability to be a new individual. You put yourself in a position to truly put the past behind you and start fresh. But, no matter where you are or what your position is in life, this only becomes true if you allow it to be. If you are still mentally holding yourself back to past positions or situations, you won’t truly feel at ease no matter where you are.
When you have a limited perspective of yourself, it makes it more challenging for true growth to take place, and for new opportunities to enter. Physically you are in one place, but mentally you are partially still back in another.
Take time to acknowledge the positive things you are doing currently that you weren’t doing before. Areas where you have gotten better, gotten sharper, and improved. Realize that you have come a long way from the “old you” and continue to move in a new direction.
Let Go Of Things That No Longer Serve You
Sometimes a big part of letting go of the past is letting go of things that no longer serve where you’re currently at. This could be anything from people, thoughts, habits, environments, or even clothes and accessories. Sometimes change in that regard can feel really good. But, realize that these changes are only superficial unless a deeper mental shift has come along as well. Change on the surface can represent change on the inside. The two can come together hand in hand as you move forward on your path.
This doesn’t mean that you have to go running around your house throwing away everything in sight. Let the change come naturally. Slowly over time, you will come to replace things from the past, and these changes will represent a new period of your life.
A pair of shoes from years ago gets old and worn out, so you throw them away and buy a new pair. Your old laptop becomes outdated, so you upgrade it with something better. This is how life naturally shifts and progresses. But for some, this isn’t always the case. Some people, for whatever reason, refuse to throw away the old and bring in new. They hang on to things for way longer than they should, and sometimes even continue to hang on to things that don’t even work properly anymore. This represents an internal unwillingness to go with the flow of life. It just gets presented on an external level.
Find New Things That Align With Where You’re Currently At
As you are letting go of old, outdated things that no longer serve you, it provides an opportunity to find new things that do serve you. Things that align with where you are currently, and give you the ability to be the person that you want to be. This could be a job, a living arrangement, a relationship, or new friendships.
Many sorts of people find themselves undergoing these kinds of transformations in life. Prisoners who serve time then finally get released. Recovering alcoholics who go through treatment and then move forward to a healthier lifestyle. Even just ordinary, natural life situations can present these sorts of opportunities for change. Folks that have recently retired. Freshly graduated high school or college students. And folks that have recently transitioned out of the military.
In any of those circumstances, the thing that often makes the most sense is to let go of those past situations and make room for the new. A freshly released prisoner wouldn’t continue to walk around in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. A recently retired military officer wouldn’t continue to walk around everyday in their military uniform. Sometimes it really is time to let go and make change.
