The Importance of Remaining Humble

In today’s age of social media it can be very easy to take on an inflated sense of self. With the power of the internet, almost every person on the planet has the potential to be some sort of a celebrity. Some entrepreneurs such as Gary Vaynerchuk even go as far to say that the wave of the future is that “every person will be famous to at least 15 people”.

While all this might sound exciting, it also makes it that much more important to remain humble and grounded. In a world of follower counts, viewer engagements, and business partnerships, it becomes more important than ever not to get too carried away. You might think you’re special because “so and so liked your pic” or because “so and so featured you in their video”, but the reality is that at the core you are just like everybody else. No matter how much fame, status, or “clout” you have, that continues to be the case.

Remember Where You Started From

Regardless of how famous, successful, or popular you are, chances are you didn’t start like that. Chances are at some point you might have even felt rejected, passed up on, or overlooked in one way or another. Almost everyone does at some point or another.

One of the things to be careful for is to use “fame” as a way to compensate for this. To some extent, you still identify with that old you, and now you use your newfound popularity as a way to cope with it. You over-exaggerate your status in the eyes of others to make up for not feeling included or feeling overlooked in the past.

It’s always important to remember where you came from without getting overly identified with that past version of yourself. That was you then and this is you now. But you realize that at the core, you are a human, with past failures and setbacks that you had to learn how to overcome. With that you can be more appreciative for the person you are today while having compassion for others who are on a similar walk of life.

Remain Balanced and Healthy

For some people, it seems like their whole world is Instagram. If somehow Instagram suddenly was no longer available, it would be as if their whole entire Being would vanish as well.

When you go out into the world and have normal experiences, it helps bring you back down to solid ground. You may come across other people and recognize their “Beingness” as well. This doesn’t always come across on social media, where a lot of what you see is based on flashy status symbols, unrealistic body types, and false images. There is a place for it, and it isn’t all bad. Some of it is just entertainment. But, that’s where it becomes important to remain balanced.

Use social media as a platform to share your art and connect with others. Not just as a resource to try to boost your ego and your sense of self.

Analyze Your “Whys”

Why do you do the things that you do? Is it because you want to reach your full potential as a human-being? Is it because you want to pave the way for a better future for yourself and others? Or is it something else?

It’s always important to take a step back to look at things from that angle. For most people, social media is just a way to connect with others and share what’s going on in their lives. Not everyone is interested in being the next big thing. Not everyone is looking to get involved with a bunch of nonsense.

For most people, it is nice to be able to open up social media and take a look at interesting, good looking people. Independent business owners buy followers and likes because they want to look more attractive to prospective clients. Folks post flashy pictures because they know it will captivate a larger audience. But, beneath all that, there has to be a deeper “why”. Otherwise, you’re just buying into shallow, superficial nonsense.

Final Thoughts

In today’s world, it becomes more important than ever to remain humble. It becomes more important than ever not to compare yourself to others, and not to feel entitled. You might be a good looking person, and you might be an intelligent person, but other people are not obligated to do anything for you because of it. People are not obligated to engage with your content, or give you anything in particular. Everything you receive is to be earned and appreciated.
