Tips For Staying Healthy While in Between Jobs

Being in between jobs can either be an excuse to fall off the wagon or a reason to step up and get better. With no one standing over you telling you what to do or where to go, it can be so easy to default toward laziness and bad habits. As someone who has been in that position multiple times, I feel like I’ve learned the dos and don’ts well enough by this point.

As mentioned briefly in my previous article, being in between jobs can provide a good landscape to restore balance to your health, wellness, and personal life when approached correctly. In this article I would like to lay out some of the ways to ensure that is the case.

Be Frugal With Your Money

With no income coming in you’re probably not going to want to take on excessive spending habits while in between jobs. Depending on what your savings looks like, you may find yourself having to cut out some of the small luxuries you more frequently enjoyed while you were working. Ordering takeout, picking up extra items from the grocery store, going in for expensive massages. You can still enjoy these things from time to time, but the truth is that if you’re not tied up with work during the day, there is less need for them.

The less you can have to rely on taking on credit card debt, and the more you can maintain your savings, the easier it’s going to be to pick back up when you do find a new work situation. Seeing your savings dwindle and taking on extra debt is just going to add more stress to your situation. Not to mention that it could negatively impact your credit score in the long run.

There are plenty of ways to stay active and productive while in between jobs, and many of them cost no money at all. Some of them can actually make you money if you stick with them in the long term.

Get Out of the House During The Day

With no excuse to get up and out of the house in the morning, it can be easy to lose motivation and start laying around more than you should. That’s where it becomes increasingly important to manage your time effectively and ensure that you’re keeping yourself on track.

In some cases, you may want to set up a schedule for yourself that mimics the way things would look in a typical work environment. It doesn’t have to be 9 to 5 on the dot, and it doesn’t have to look the same every day. Maybe it is 10 to 5, or maybe it’s 11 to 7.

The point is that you’re continuing to get out, move, and shake. Nothing is going to fall through the roof and land in your lap. The more you’re getting out and doing good things, the more likely you are to come across new opportunities, and the easier it’s going to be to make that transition when you do eventually find one.

Maintain a Good Balance

Some people enjoy doing the same things at the same time on the same days. I personally am not one of those people. I enjoy variety, and I like to move in new directions and make new adjustments along the way. For that reason, I tend to switch things up fairly regularly.

Regardless of what kind of schedule you prefer, maintaining a good balance is going to be your best bet. Having a good amount of activities that you can enjoy. Having different places to go to and different people to see.

Hanging at the house all day and playing video games might sound awesome, but you’re going to find out pretty quickly that it really isn’t. Going and laying out by the beach might be cool for a day or two, but you’re not going to want to do that every single day. Instead, find different things to do throughout the day, and implement new things along the way.

Final Thoughts

If managed and approached correctly, being in between jobs doesn’t have to be a negative thing. Give yourself time to digest your previous work situation, and continue to make good strides as you move toward a new opportunity. Continue to grow as an individual, have new experiences, and have fun along the way.
