How It Feels Being Back On The Road
For the past 2 years I have relied primarily on an electric bike and the occasional Uber as my main forms of transportation.
Even though I enjoyed the e-bike, I must say that it feels really good to be back driving again.
Most people don’t know what it feels like to go that long without driving. Sometimes you will hear about someone who had their license revoked, or someone who lives in a big city and doesn’t need a car. But in most cases, those instances are pretty rare.
You Drive Better
When I get behind the wheel now, I genuinely enjoy and appreciate it. This means that when I drive, I tend to drive slower and with more focus.
When I see other cars speeding, tailgating, or driving impatiently, I almost laugh to myself. Compare driving 45 mph to riding an e-bike at 28 mph and you can see why.
You Drive More Purposefully
You would think that after 2 years of not driving that I would be using the first opportunity behind the wheel to be out joy-riding all over the place, but that isn’t the case. I’m actually driving a lot more precisely than I was even before.
In a way, I think using the e-bike for so long helped with that. For the past 2 years I have kept most of my daily trips within a fairly tight radius. My options were fairly slim, so it made it easy to decide what I felt like doing or where I felt like going for the day.
Now that I am back driving, I am able to apply the same techniques. I am doing a good job of bunching stops in together, and I don’t feel as inclined to drive all over the place.
You Enjoy Getting Out And About
Now when I do get the chance to go out, I genuinely enjoy it.
Just the other night I was out at the gym around 8 or 9 p.m. and it felt so good. With being on the e-bike, I typically refrained from taking it out at night.
When someone sends me a text to invite me to come over and do something 10-15 minutes down the road, it feels good to know that I can get over there. It’s nice to be able to incorporate different moves like that throughout the day, and at the moment I am appreciating the change of scenery.
Getting Back In The Right Groove
Overall, these are all really good things for me. When I was riding the e-bike it had gotten to the point where it had been so long that I almost couldn’t picture doing things any other way. When the opportunity to purchase my new vehicle came up I took it as a pleasant surprise, and now I am thoroughly enjoying it.
