Very Excited About Giannis’ Trade to the HEAT
The Miami HEAT have been in the media a lot over the past couple of weeks. If you are a sports fan, chances are you have seen that they’ve made some big trades recently, with one of them being the superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo coming to the team.
As a HEAT fan, this is very exciting. Although the HEAT have made a couple of great runs over the past 6 years, they have struggled to maintain a position of consistent contention. A trade like this has the potential to change that in a big way.
However, beyond just what goes on within the four lines of the court, there is something to be taken away from this trade that is not just related to basketball. And that wasn’t something that I had personally picked up on until watching a recent interview with Giannis and ex-announcer Jim Paschke.
Making a Transition
In the interview, Giannis gives big time praise to the city of Milwaukee as he makes his exit toward Miami.
He explains that Milwaukee is his home, and has been for the past 13 years, but in his heart he feels that he has more to accomplish as a basketball player, and that making a change will be the best way for him to pursue a new path.
The interviewer Jim acknowledges that making a change like this may force Giannis to adopt a way of life that he isn’t used to, and Giannis personally admits his own fears regarding the move.
However, Giannis also says that it’s these kinds of decisions that can cause regret later in life if left unfulfilled. He says that he wouldn’t want to look back when he is 80 and feel like he made the wrong choice.
He also says that a player that is unwilling to be vulnerable is a player who is unwilling to grow. If you already are the “best” then there is nothing that anyone can tell you or teach you, and you lose the spirit of what got you into the position you’re in now in the first place.
Personal Takeaways
I really enjoyed this interview because as a fan it gave me perspective behind Giannis’ decision beyond just the hype that you see online.
Typically when a trade like this happens you see the players who are involved, the contract prices, and the reactions, but you don’t always hear the genuine thought processes that led to the deal.
It was refreshing to hear Giannis explain his decision so candidly because he was coming from a place that I found relatable even as a 29 year-old that has never played in the NBA.
I thought about different moments in my own life where I made similar choices, and about how sometimes being willing to make a big transition like this can be one of the best ways to move forward.
The Miami HEAT
I wrote an article recently titled Why I Love The Miami HEAT after watching Erik Spoelstra’s season-ending interview in April.
In the article I explained that what makes the HEAT culture so great is their willingness to improve.
In that interview Erik Spoelstra basically said, “We gave it our best shot, but we’re going to go back to the drawing board and find out what we can do better.”
It was almost no surprise when you started seeing headlines for big trade deals just a couple of months later.
As a HEAT fan, I’ve seen a decent number of these sorts of trades go down over the past 15 years. The HEAT have an exceptional ability to not only develop players, but also make big moves that can benefit the team.
I personally feel that the trade for Giannis will go down as one of those special acquisitions, and I look forward to seeing how the team plays with him on the roster.
