My Blog is Like My Private Journal

About 10 years ago I started the practice of keeping a private journal. At first it was something I used only occasionally, but over time it became a big part of my day-to-day routine.

While being away for college, living through COVID, and being in and out of the workforce after graduation, journaling became a way for me to connect with myself and organize my thoughts at a time when I needed it.

By mid 2021 I had stacked up a pile of notebooks so tall that I could barely close the drawer for the cabinet that they were in.

Occasionally when I felt like it, I would go back through and re-read the journals that I had written over the past year or so. It was interesting to go back through to see how my life had evolved in the months since, and it helped me gain perspective on where I was at currently.

However, before moving into my new home in 2024, I took that big pile of notebooks and threw them into the trash.

It was mainly because I just didn’t have the space for them in my new place. And I felt like I didn’t need to take them with me in the direction that I was heading.

Starting This Site

Over the years the idea of taking my private journal entries and sharing them in a public way was something that I played around with, even if it would be more edited/curated than what I was writing normally.

Finally in late 2024 I put that idea in motion when I started this site.

Writing for this site has been a lot of fun because it is taking something that I would normally do just for me and framing it in a different way.

I wouldn’t typically sit down and write something like “Reflecting on 4 years Post College Graduation” just for recreation.

Writing for this site has been a cool way to explore those topics while also building something.

Blogging is Free-Flowing

One of the things that I enjoy about blogging is that each post starts as a blank slate.

I sit down with an open page, not knowing what I’m going to write, and from there things just kind of orchestrate organically.

I love writing music for the same reason, even though writing music is a little different since you are involving the instrumental as well.

However, I will be honest and say that a lot of my early blog posts have read more like a personal journal than an official “blog”. Because that’s just how I’m used to writing.

This has been a fun project because it has helped me not only grow as a writer but also sharpen my perspective in some areas.

Keeping it Going While Managing Expectations

When I first started this site I had hopes that maybe blogging could become a stream of income for me down the line.

I had seen sites like “Financial Samurai” where writers were making money not only publishing for their site, but also adding in related services, products, and content on the side.

However, I also realize that blogging is just one piece of the pie. Although I never really considered blogging as a potential bread-winning endeavor, my expectations have also gotten lower as I’ve gone along.

At this point I realize that whether or not my blog generates money doesn’t really matter.

More than anything I do this because I enjoy it.

A Big Thank You

If you have been reading along with my posts on this site, you have had the chance to read through a journal that otherwise may have remained private.

This is my way of taking the personal insights I’ve gained over the past 10 years and sharing them in a public way.

As always, I hope that you have enjoyed, and I hope that you have taken away something positive.
